SET TO OPEN IN Q1 2023
- NEST is the first building of the 495 MW Hyperscaler Data Centre and will have 15MW;
- Initial investment of EUR 130 million;
- NEST willcreate 70 to 100 new highly qualified jobs in Sines, Portugal;
- SINES 4.0© It will be one of the largest data center campuses in Europe and will be 100% green.
Sines, Portugal, April 26, 2022 – Start Campus started today the construction of the first phase of SINES 4.0©, an Hyperscale Data Centre campus of up to 495MW, to be located in Sines, Portugal, a project with an ultimate investment size of up to €3.5 billion.
NEST – New & Emerging Sustainable Technologies – will be the first building on the campus, with a total capacity of 15 MW, set to open on the first quarter of 2023.
NEST is the first building of what will become one of the largest data center campuses in Europe. SINES 4.0© will be 100% green and when it is completed, in 2027, it will have 9 buildings (NEST with 15MW plus8 buildings with 60MW each). SINES 4.0© is in the Industrial and Logistics Zone of Sines (ZILS), on the land adjacent to the recently closed Coal Thermoelectric Power Station in Sines.
The first phase of the project represents an investment of €130 million. Since last year, €20 million have been invested in this project that will directly create 70 to 100 new high-qualification professional jobs in Sines, such as Telecommunications, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers. Indirect jobs estimated to be created this year total 400 jobs.
NEST will have a total of 5,000 m2 and will be a smaller model of the other SINES 4.0© campus 8 buildings . This building will be available for 1 to 6 customers (6 data halls of 2.5MW each). Start Campus will also provide green power, sustainable cooling and administrative support. The mega data centre will be state-of-the-art core infrastructure at the heart of the Sines 4.0© project. This will combine the needs of the new age of digital transition with the unique geographical position of Portugal and Sines, whilst significantly contributing to Portugal’s and Europe´s energy transition. Start Campus aims
for a net zero carbon footprint for Sines 4.0© while guaranteeing globally competitive energy prices, security, stability and data safety compliance.
Sines 4.0© will benefit from all the strategic advantages of its location such as sea-water cooling systems, usage of existing industrial infrastructures to minimize environmental impact, strong Portuguese capillarity in connectivity through the connection to high-capacity international fiber optic cables as well as the potential use of 100% green and environmentally-sustainable energy creating highly efficient PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) and water consumption ratios.
The project leverages the strategic geographic position of Sines and Portugal on the periphery of Europe with the help of new submarine cables: EllaLink (connecting Portugal to Madeira and South America, Equiano 2Africa (connecting the entire African continent to Europe through Portugal) and Medusa (connecting the Mediterranean). Sines was chosen, among other possibilities, because it is one of the most extraordinary locations in Europe: it connects three continents, has the capacity to attract the most qualified (sun, sea, security, proximity to Lisbon and 2 international airports).
For Afonso Salema, Start Campus CEO, “The start of the fist building, NEST, is an important milestone for this project. This investment responds to two trends that have been confirmed in recent years: digital transformation and sustainability. We want to make a difference creating new qualified jobs and attracting more investment with positive community impact to Sines and Portugal”.
“There is a huge international demand for data centers from Hyperscalers. The international market is rapidly developing, confirmed by trends such as teleworking, consumption of streaming services, cloud computing, social media, among others”.
